Heart Safe programs and successesHeart Safe Communities continues to make a difference in communities and in the lives of sudden cardiac arrest victims. Sudden cardiac arrestSudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is usually caused by an electrical malfunction of the heart. The only effective treatment is an electric shock to the heart called defibrillation. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs)Automated external defibrillators are small portable electronic devices that analyzes the heart's rhythm and tell the users to deliver a defibrillation shock only if it is needed.
