As the largest hospital-based program of its kind in the country, the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing at Abbott Northwestern is setting national standards for enhancing health care through an integrative health approach. We do this by:
blending complementary therapies, integrative medicine and conventional Western medicine
providing services to inpatients and outpatients
educating health care professionals
teaching community members about health promotion and self-healing practices
conducting research to identify best practices of integrative health and the impact of these services on health care costs.
New online pain education
The Penny George Institute has launched an online education tool to teach people about pain and how to manage it. You will learn about the pain process, integrative health approaches that can help, and some pain management exercises to try at home.
The LiveWell philosophy encourages everyone to seek their highest level of well-being every day. Our goal is to develop an exercise program that enhances your overall health.
Transforming health care
The Penny George Institute came into existence in 2003 through the visionary support of the George Family Foundation and the Ted and Roberta Mann Foundation.
Mission
To transform health care locally through the provision of outstanding integrative care to patients and employees in all settings across Abbott Northwestern and its related institutions. The Penny George Institute will transform health care nationally through the development and dissemination of integrative care practices that demonstratably enhance quality, ensure safety and reduce costs.
Vision
The Penny George Institute seeks to transform health care by blending the art of healing and the science of curing to optimize the health of the whole person - mind, body and spirit.

Using gentle asana (easy movements and postures), breath awareness, and deep relaxation, learn how to alleviate chronic pain by strengthening different muscle groups, by bringing more circulation to the back, and by creating more functional movement patterns.
Yoga gives us tools to calm our nervous system and balance our lives. Using gentle asana (easy movements and postures), breath awareness, guided meditation and
deep relaxation, this course will give you tools to reduce stress, to gain more focus, to work with challenging emotions and to feel more balanced in your life. You will take away three short practices that can be done at home, and a home practice will be strongly encouraged.

This seated yoga class is appropriate for people in all levels of condition. We will follow the traditional format of a hatha yoga class—including a self check-in, movement practice, relaxation practice, breathing practice and meditation—while making adaptations to meet the conditions of all class participants. Each session will be dedicated to experiencing the holistic benefits of yoga. Research has shown that yoga can provide an increased sense of hope, energy, confidence and ability to perform the activities of daily living. While elevating mood, it also decreases pain, fatigue, anxiety, nausea and sleep disturbances.
This six-week series integrates restorative yoga, gentle yoga, hands-on work, breath work and guided meditation to support healing. The word healing comes from the word whole – it is the process of reuniting, restoring or returning to oneness. This practice is wonderful for those healing from injury or illness as well as for caregivers.

Resilience training
Resilience Training is an eight-week group program developed by Henry Emmons, MD, and based on his book, "The Chemistry of Joy." It is designed to help people enhance their natural resilience, making them less likely to develop problems with depression and other chronic diseases. Desired outcomes for program participants include reduced severity of depression and anxiety symptoms, a decrease in future episodes and less reliance on prescription medications.
The program begins with a consultation with Dr. Emmons. This provides an opportunity to learn more about the program and whether it is right for you, but also to receive an integrative assessment of your situation and any suggestions that Dr. Emmons feels may be helpful. Each Resilience group consists of 12 to 16 participants who meet once a week for eight weeks to gain a greater understanding of the interconnected workings of the mind, body and spirit. Resilience Training also includes individual sessions with a clinical nutritionist and an exercise physiologist.
To schedule the initial consultation, please call 612-863-3333. The fee for the appointment is $200 and is not billable to insurance. If you decide to participate in the full program, the $200 will be applied to the total Resilience Training program fee of $900.
