Public Safety

For the past 12 years, Phillips neighborhood residents and Abbott Northwestern Hospital employees have come together to discuss neighborhood safety concerns and plan crime prevention actions. The group is part of the Community Crime Prevention Initiative (CCPI) and meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at Abbott Northwestern.

The concept behind CCPI is broader than crime prevention. CCPI also functions as a tool to develop and strengthen community involvement and raise community awareness.

Minneapolis police officers representing the Community Crime Prevention/S.A.F.E. Unit attend meetings, providing residents with current neighborhood crime statistics. The officers provide information and advice from sex offender notification to clues on spotting a potential drug-making lab in the neighborhood.

Several years ago, a collaboration of government agencies, community groups, law enforcement and private corporations began working together on tough issues of crime and violence. They formed a unique partnership - Minnesota HEALS (Hope, Education And Law and Safety). This group helped create a place where these organizations could begin to work together in a systematic way. An example is CODEFOR, which fights crime by supporting community-oriented policing and other strategies to anticipate, track and respond to crime.

Collectively, these partnership efforts have produced a significant reduction of serious crime in Phillips and surrounding areas. For more information, contact Community Relations Director Eric Eoloff at 612-863-5072 or Susie Helget of SmithParker at 612-344-1400.
